Introduction

U.N Mehta launched the tranquilizer Trinicalm Plus and later went on to set up Torrent Pharmaceutical Ltd's drug formulations manufacturing facility at Indrad, Gujarat, in 1989. In 1992 the company received the President's award for highest pharmaceuticals exports of Rs.1.5 billion. In 2004 it won the Four Star Safety award from the British Safety Council. Today, the company has sales worth Rs.9.3 billion.

Partnership

Torrent has alliances with Novo Nordisk, Sanofi-Synthelabo, Astra Zeneca, National Chemical Laboratory and Pune University. In June 2005 it acquired Heumann Pharma Generics of Germany through its wholly owned German subsidiary, Torrent Pharma GmbH (TPG).
Technologies

Torrent has filed 210 patents for NCEs in all major markets worldwide. Of these, 132 patents have already been granted by the patent offices of U.S., Canada, Japan, Europe, Czech Republic, Australia, China, Hong Kong, Russia, South Africa and India. The company's R&D centre was established with an investment of $40 million and is manned by over 525 scientists. The company spends 9 per cent of its annual sales on R&D.

The Ahmedabad-based Torrent has a significant presence in more than 50 countries, including Brazil, Germany, U.S. and important Asian and African countries. Its manufacturing facilities are located at Indrad in Gujarat and at Baddi, Himachal Pradesh.
