Introduction

Total is one of the world's largest oil and gas and chemicals company. It was created by two successive mergers. Total first merged with PetroFina to create Totalfina. Then Totalfina and Elf Aquitaine came together to create TotalFinaElf. The group was renamed Total in May 2003. It has over 112, 877 employees.
Business

Total's operations are carried out through three business segments:

* Upstream: The upstream business covers oil and natural gas exploration, development and production, along with the coal, gas and power operations.
* Downstream: The downstream segment conducts Total's refining, marketing, trading and shipping activities.
* Chemicals business: The chemicals business, which employed 62,214 people in 2005, includes base chemicals like petrochemicals and fertilizers, and specialties for industry and the consumer market.

Location

Total is headquartered in France and has operations in more than 130 countries. Exploration and production activities are carried out in 41 countries with production in 29 of them. The downstream business operates a network of almost 17,000 service stations all over the world under the TOTAL and Elf banners.
