VSNL, incorporated on 1 April 1986 to take over the activities of the erstwhile Overseas Communication Services (OCS), is a leader in the Indian telecom sector. The company's main gateways are located at Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai. Its ADRs are listed on the New York Stock Exchange and shares on major Indian stock exchanges. The company employs 2000 people.

The Tata Group is VSNL's largest shareholder with a holding of 45 per cent of VSNL's equity. The Indian government owns approximately 26 per cent. Foreign investors hold 13 per cent and the rest is with Indian financial institutions and the public. For the financial year ending 31 March 2005, VSNL reported a total income of Rs.34.1 billion.
